General Information
Great tidewater glaciers, a dramatic range of plant communities from rocky terrain recently covered by ice to lush temperate rainforest, and a large variety of animals (brown and black bear, mountain goats, whales, seals, and eagles) can be found within the park. Also included are Mount Fairweather, the highest peak in southeast Alaska, and the U.S. portion of the Alsek River.
Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve is most easily seen from a boat, as it is 60 miles from the developed areas of the park to view the tidewater glaciers. Activities include sightseeing, wildlife viewing, boating, kayaking and ranger programs.
Glacier National Park is open year round.
The total visitation in 1995 was 254,160. Of the total visitors, 203,789 came aboard cruise ships. Cruises up the Inside Passage often include a day in Glacier Bay. Cruise ships and tour boats travel up the bay to see the tidewater glaciers, cruise along the shoreline searching for wildlife and enjoy the scenery. A tour boat leaves Bartlett Cove daily for a nine-hour cruise.
